Episode Summary

On week two of this "local series" I sit down with an old time family doctor, Greg Feinsinger.

I learned about Dr. Feinsinger before moving to Carbondale when a friend mentioned there was an awesome plant based doctor who gave lots of talks and offered free health consultations in the community. How awesome! It is so cool to be in a community where there is indeed a huge plant based movement, thanks largely to Dr. Feinsinger.

In this conversation we cover a lot - from his 42 years of clinical practice to his personal health transformation.

Some highlights of this conversation include...

  • The lack of nutritional education in medical training
  • How Greg woke up to the power of food to heal
  • The many conditions that are easily reversed on a plant based diet
  • How Greg began to experience optimal health late in life
  • Ways to stay active, fit, and healthy at any stage of life

Hope you enjoy! Please feel free to leave a comment, rating, or review on whatever platform you choose to tune in on!

About Dr. Feinsinger

Dr. Greg Feinsinger was raised in Aspen, Colorado, where his role models were his family’s general practitioners. His parents always encouraged him to go into medicine, because in medicine you can be assured of helping others—the most satisfying thing in life.

He graduated from Aspen High School in 1959, and received a B.A. in political science from Oberlin College, in Oberlin, Ohio, in 1963. He received his M.D. from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, in Denver, in 1968, followed by a rotating internship at San Joaquin County Hospital, in Stockton, California, from 1968 to 1969.  From 1969 to 1971 he served in the Indian Health Service, in Fort Hall, Idaho. He completed a family practice residency at Community Hospital of Sonoma County, affiliated with the University of California San Francisco, in 1973.  The same year he joined Glenwood Medical Associates in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, where he practiced family medicine for forty-two years, retiring in 2015.

Dr. Feinsinger met his wife, Kathy, when he was a sophomore in medical school and she was a sophomore in nursing school at the University of Colorado—they were married in 1966. Kathy later worked as a nurse practitioner at Rocky Mountain Planned Parenthood for twenty-seven years. They have three grown children and eight grandchildren.

After retirement, Dr. Feinsinger started a nonprofit: Prevention and Treatment of Disease Through Nutrition. He does free consultations about heart attack prevention, nutrition, and other medical issues, promotes plant-based nutrition through lectures, and a monthly plant-based potluck, and writes weekly columns for the Glenwood Post Independent.

Dr. Feinsinger is currently involved through the Valley Settlement Project to help immigrants learn about nutrition and healthy eating.

He is a Worldloppet Gold Master (completed eleven of the long version of Worldloppet Nordic ski races on three continents) and continues to run and bike.
